How I Sped Up My Site
How I Finally Sped Up My Site
I’ll admit it: last week on Instagram, I confessed that my own website, the one I pour my SEO expertise into, was sloooow.
Not an easy thing to admit as an SEO specialist, but there it was, lagging, loading at a crawl. After dozens of reports and a deep dive into every page, block, and line of code, I knew what had to be done. I couldn’t keep every shiny feature without a cost.
Some things had to go.
So, I stripped back.
I hushed the designer in me who craved gallery marquees and animated text that glided through the site. Did they add beauty? Sure. But did they make my message any clearer to someone visiting my page for a purpose? Not really. I even asked my partner’s opinion, and he confessed he barely noticed the extras while reading my pitch. That settled it—I said goodbye to most of the JavaScript. The images were still there, but no more endless slides, just the essentials.
Next, I got hands-on with the code.
I tackled my CSS, line by line, streamlining every bit. Thanks to tips from the Standout Squarespace course with Rache, I learned to make it cleaner, sharper, without anything to weigh down the load time. Organizing, tightening, simplifying—I refined it all, right down to the bare minimum.
Finally, I put on my SEO hat.
I combed through every link, AND every redirect. Broken links? Fixed. Old paths? Updated. Each one checked and double-checked, and just like that, another boost to the site’s speed. (Wondering what redirects do? I’ve got a breakdown for you here.)
After all that, the task seemED clear, but there were days I was ready to throw in the towel. The constant alerts—“Another report, another slowdown”—kept me grinding, though, and pushed me to finish.
If there’s one takeaway, it’s this: SEO isn’t just keywords; speed is a deal-breaker. If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, visitors are gone before they even see your work.
Think about it—do you have the patience to wait more than 5 seconds for a page to load?
ive seconds feels like nothing, but in today’s world, each one matters. We’ve learned that since the Olympics: every second counts. In business, it’s no different.
Don’t lose visitors, sales, or trust just because of a slow site.
